Engine ignition is referred to as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), which is a combination of spark ignition (SI-Engine) and compression ignition (Diesel Engine). The procedure uses a homogeneous fuel-air mixture, similar to a SI engine, and a high compression ratio to auto-ignite the mixture, similar to a diesel engine. This lean homogenous mixture minimizes particle emissions while also assisting auto-ignition, lowering NOx emissions by 90 to 98 percent. When compared to SI engines, the engine is said to provide a 15% to 30% gain in fuel economy.

A key aspect driving the Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) Market is reducing CO2 and NOx emissions while improving the fuel economy of IC engine cars. HCCI technology has proven to be as efficient as compression-ignition direct-injection (CIDI) engines while emitting ultra-low NOx and particulate matter (PM). HCCI engines run on gasoline, diesel, and a variety of alternative fuels. For transportation vehicles, HCCI represents the next important step beyond high-efficiency CIDI and spark-ignition, direct-injection (SIDI) engines.
